About Cris Jara
Oil pastel artist. Born in Spain, based in Copenhagen. Drawn to food, memory, and the warmth hidden in ordinary things.
Cris Jara works in oil pastel — a medium she chose for its immediacy and its particular relationship with colour. Each mark is made once; the surface holds it. There is no correcting, only building.
Her paintings orbit the kitchen, the table, the bowl of fruit left in the afternoon light. Food as subject matter is never purely about appetite — it is about place, time, and the people who were there. Growing up between Spain and Scandinavia has made that tension between climates and cultures a constant undercurrent in the work.
The series placeres diario gathers quiet pauses, interior scenes, and the small rituals that give a day its shape. comida celebrates the directness of food itself. estaciones follows shifts in colour, atmosphere, and light across the seasons.
She lives and works in Copenhagen.
Medium & practice
Medium
Oil pastels — primarily Sennelier and Caran d'Ache Neopastel — for their pigment richness and directness. The mark stays where it lands.
Surface
Pastelmat board and heavy cotton paper. The tooth of the surface determines how many layers the work can hold.
Subject
Food, kitchens, everyday objects. The ordinary things that carry time and feeling without announcing themselves.
